Roam Free!

Growing up, I remember my dogs always having free reign of the house whether we were home or not. With Penny, we decided to crate train her since she was a puppy, we live in an apartment, and there are a LOT of shoes and toys and kid things all over my house perfect for chewing. Like my poor Converse sneakers that were a victim of a puppy attack last summer.

She's done really well with the crate and I think she actually enjoys having her own little space, but I feel bad putting her in there when I know she just wants to sleep on our bed all day while we're at work. I'm not worried about accidents in the house; she's been very, very good about letting us know when she needs to go outside. It's just the chewing.

In a daring and completely random decision, on my lunch break today I cleaned up as much around the house as I could to avoid chewing temptation....and left her out.

NOTHING WAS EATEN! Thank the puppy gods. Day one worked out. Here's to many more. Aside from her being a happier dog with the freedom to go in her crate or not, it also keeps me more accountable to put my shoes away (bad habit that annoys the crap out of Jeff) and clean up the kids' toys before we leave for work and daycare. It is a good thing all around.

May no more shoes be chewed.

  1. Your puppy=ADORABLE! I wish you all the best. I am still too nervous to let my 6 1/2 month old pit bull roam free while we are not home. Maybe soon, though! Fingers crossed.
